LEST MY FRIENDS IN COLDER CLIMATES THINK...

...I spend all my time languishing in warmer temperatures - well, you're right!  But occasionally I do venture out of the uncomfort zone of the Vegas desert.  Feeling for my east coast friends, who are undoubtedly sick of it right about now and, either using these photos now or in the middle of my sweltering 120 degree summer (it's our payoff for no snow), I choose now!
A New Year's trip back home to CO allowed me to play in the snow a little (bracing for a harder winter, it's been relatively mild there, too). Believe it or not, I miss snow - and shoveling!  Colorado has the perfect weather - as the old saying goes, "if you don't like the weather, wait 15 minutes".  The top two photos were taken during the start of a small storm one evening up in the old mining town of Black Hawk, followed by the bottom photo of what we woke to the next morning.
The air was a crisp 28 degrees, give or take - the snow melts pretty fast on sun-soaked asphalt roads...
while leaving its beautiful mark on anything not paved.
The darling, stationary carousel/gazebo in town was playing calliope music while I ran around it, trying to stay out of the cold shade.
The Sasquatch Casino - because they didn't come up with the idea in Vegas, first!!!
The trip back down the canyon was spectacular - clear roads, and just enough snow to enhance the always gorgeous scenery.
Yes, I miss the snow.  I miss SEASONS!  I hate the summers in Vegas, more with each passing year.  124 degrees is no fun, no matter WHERE you live - and we have more than our share of those days. Alas, we will miss spring (or it will actually come for about a week), and plunge straight into the depths of freakish temperatures from hell!
To my friends on the east coast, I feel your pain, but you can laugh at me in months to come - I will deserve it.  I DO miss the snow - honest, I do! P.S.  The first scorpion of the year reared it's ugly head last night - another sign we are heading for a hot one!  It's only the beginning of FEBRUARY and they should still be sleeping - ARGH!  Yes, you suffering in the cold shall have the last laugh on me!
Stay warm, my snowbound friends -
hope it's a GRRRRRRRRRRRREAT week!

  1. I enjoyed these photos! We were in Colorado back in the winter of 1973; my husband had a temporary assignment with IBM in Boulder. A beautiful state! Our son was just a few weeks old, so that limited our sight-seeing a bit.

  2. Wonderful pictures, Thank you for posting them
I like the four seasons as well. However, the desert is as beautiful covered with snow as a thick New England forest. One difference is there are no cactus to bump into in the woods. :) As for heat versus snow shoveling...Show me the Shovel!

  3. "well, you're right" made me laugh! Thanks so much for sharing all these wonderful images of a place I love/d.
I know what you mean about missing the climate you don't have, but the entire time I lived in CO - more than 7 years - I never once missed the kind of snow I grew up with in MA. The CO climate was pretty appealing...snow that came, then WENT. Blue skies and sunshine so that you could be out in just a t-shirt when there was snow on the ground! I know I could never tolerate the kind of heat you enjoy (mostly), or the humidity of lots of places even more humid than New England. But I often imagine where I might relocate if money was no object and I could find just the right spot. New England ain't for sissies, and at this point in my life I think I may be becoming one!

  5. I really enjoyed your photos too-and you are so right no matter where we live there is always a trade off-we moved from northern Illinois to mid Missouri to retire so we would have milder winters but still all the seasons-the trade off here is drought and very hot summers-which I am not used to. we usually get a little snow-which I enjoy-but as of yet no snow here where I live

  7. Travels with Tanya and her incredible wit! I did not grow up with Seasons and therefore really do not appreciate them...however living here in Northern California the Seasons are quite real. I am learning to adjust and finding it not too bad. Moderation in all things for me. Thank you for the travels dear...

  8. You had me at temperatures from hell!!! I seriously don't know how you do it either....I melt in hot weather and though the hubs could pick up and leave I would miss the seasons too. Just looking at those beautiful shots you captured in Colorado say it all! The trees look like a fairytale shimmering like that! And yes....I do feel bad for the east coast this year...they have been nailed with the snow for sure! You take care buddy...any chance you could ever end up back in Colorado??? Happy Heart day to you....we use your heart cookie cutters that you sent me a couple of years ago ALL THE TIME!!! We are using them for pancakes in the morning!! Take care you! Nicole xoxo

  9. Last year's Colorado winter was hell for Yusef, but this year he says it has been very mild where he is. He went ice fishing over the weekend with friends and wound up getting very sunburned. I don't like cold so could never live in snow but it's nice to visit. :) I also don't like extreme heat but we get to 120 and above for a good portion of the year. Not good for walking, that's for sure. Best wishes, Tammy
